Small Business Spotlight – Brown Horse Garments

There are more than a few things that make Brown Horse Garments stand out from the crowd.  This is by no means your average tshirt company, make no mistake about that!  Meet Angelo, Andi, Katie, and Rick – a group of passionate believers with a desire to share the Word of God and to raise support for missions.  In a studio space in downtown Youngstown, four people gather round a table to discuss their next project and bounce around some new ideas.  When I asked Andi how Brown Horse decides what mission they are going to support, her answer was simple:  “We pray about it and do what God tells us.”

It was an honor to spend time with the BHG herd and hear about what they do and how they do it.  I love their mission, I love their motivation, and I love their desire to change the world – because nothing can change the world quite like God’s Word.  Hear them share a little bit about themselves and their mission, and maybe you too can find some encouragement in their story.

Without further ado, it is my pleasure to introduce to you Brown Horse Garments!

Our mission at Brown Horse Garments is to be a catalyst for conviction. As blinders keep horses from being distracted, our shirts are designed to ignite meaningful conversations, to focus the wearer on the calling to spread the Word of God. Our prayer is that we are blessed so that we can bless others.

Angelo, BHG’s photographer, recently acquired an art studio in the Trinkle Sign building in downtown Youngstown. He discovered shirt screening equipment in the basement, and the building’s owner, Bob Page, has generously allowed us to begin screening our garments in-house, even training Angelo in the screening process. Prior to this, we had been out-sourcing all the screening work, and because of this cost-saving measure, we are now able to use this savings to support our mission. We thank God for His faithful provision.

{In Malachi 3:10, God dares us to try to out-give Him. He instructs us to trust Him with everything, to see Him “pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”}

Each of our four current collections is designed to support a specific mission:

The {Willing to Go} collection is taken from Christ’s promise in Mark 1:17 to make us fishers of men. We donate all profits from {Willing to Go} to the work of Mentor Leaders as they spread the Gospel in Africa. More info @ mentorleaders.org.

{We Have}, inspired by Hebrews 6:19, is particularly dear to us as all profits from this go directly to our two-year old friend Mazzy, as she battles spina bifida. More info @facebook.com/wehavemazzysback.

Our most recent collection, {All the Earth}, comes from Psalm 8. We launched this on Earth Day 2013,and all proceeds are donated to the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation’s urban green space project. More info @ yndc.org.

The original, {God is Love}, is based on 1 John 4:16, and the proceeds from this collection enable us to spread the message of BHG. More info @brownhorsegarments.comfacebook.com/brownhorsegarments.

Support a mission. Spread the Word. Say a prayer. Be a Brown Horse.

    Just read your blog. My first experience with a blog. Very interesting.
    You are doing what most of us never think to do or take action to do, if we do think of it. The joy is in the planning! Advent and Lent are all about the planning, the preparation, the celebration. You can see the Holy Spirit in your faces. Keep up the good work. Let me know if I can help in anyway.
